请看这句话：Passive smoking, the breathing in of the side stream smoke from the burning of tobacco between puffs or of the smoke exhaled by a smoker, also causes a serious health risk.

如果同学们逐字去看的话会被很多生词所困扰，看完一句话反而什么不清楚这句话到底在讲什么。所以我们来抓这句话的主谓宾：主语是Passive smoking，谓语是causes，宾语是health risk。那么这句话的意思就很明显了--被动吸烟引发健康危险。而中间the breathing....risk 这一部分是同位语，和passive smoking 有相同的语法成分，理解起来是难点，但是不看不会影响大意的理解。

剑5 Test3 里的一道heading题，原文是这样的：

The fertile land of the Nile delta is being eroded along Egypt's Mediterranean coast at an astounding rate,in some parts estimated at 100 meters per year. 通过上面的例子看出，在阅读英文段落的长句子是要将目光锁定在句子中的主语、谓语、宾语上，因为句子中的80%的信息由上述三种成分传递的，而其他成分，包括修饰性的形容词、副词、定语从句等都是用来进一步的丰富解释内容的。
