In some countries; the difference in age between parents and children is general-

ly greater than it was in the past. Do you think the advantages of the development

outweigh the disadvantages?

There is one constant in life, and that is change. This is seen in the widening generation gap between

parents and offspring. | believe this shift is largely negative and has significant ramifications in the

realm of traditional values and senior citizens.

Since the mid-nineties, China has experienced sweeping changes: poltically, industrially and with the

family structure. The *iron rice bowl' no longer sustains the masses, yet the free market reigns.

Furthermore, with new wealth, young adults are seeking tertiary education which delays entry to the

workforce. Relationships have been placed on hold as education, career advancement and job

mobility take precedence. Young couples who once started a family in their hometown in their early

twenties, now live far away, and are delaying parenthood until their thirties and later. The trend of tying

the knot later has the benefit of parental maturity, plus a child raised in prosperity, albeit less contact

with grandparents.

Unfortunately, grandparents now find themselves in an isolated world. The traditional values they hold

dear, differ from their son or daughter. The physical distance makes personal contact impossible and

social media, though helpful, is not the answer to bridging gaps in age, values as well as expectations.

What is more, elderly parents longing for a grandchild to dote on, are now feeling robbed of a

bithright. Consequently, sadness and resentment are forever present. As the grandparents age, once

strong bonds of filial duty are less, which deepens this insular feeling.

In conclusion, postponing parenthood is the result of several factors, such as a competitive education

system and job market. This can be compounded by high career aspirations and individualism with a

shit in thinking away from the family unit. This has, and will continue to be a challenge to families and

society.
