The table compares two years (1985 and 2000) about the changes in traveling modes in England (measured in units of average distance travelled per person per year), and overall, it shows that the total distance travelled extended by 1,700 over the years.
Among all given travel modes, those usually for long distance, including car, long distance bus and train, all rose in figures, particularly the change in distance by car (more than 1600) which accounted for the most of the increase in the total. However, an opposite trend can be found in short distance traveling modes (local bus, taxi, walking and bicycle), the distance traveled by which generally shortened except by taxi. Two easily draw our attention since the shortest millage was either by taxi (13 in 1985) or by bicycle (41 in 2000). The distance by other modes, though collectively increasing from 1985 to 2000, consistently remained the second place.
