Some people think visual images (like photographs, videos) can tell information more accurately in a news story, while others think they are not reliabe sources. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

参考范文 It is easy to notice that there are an increasing number of visual images, such as photographs and videos, in news stories today. While some people claim that imagery can deliver more accurate information, others argue that it cannot describe the whole story. Generally, I think both opinions hold truth to some extent.

Nowadays, journalism relies heavily on visual images to create strong messages, especially when online news platforms are becoming main sources of information. Unlike text-based reports, pictorial contents and videos have the power to convey meaning more vividly. This is because they can instantly change people’s mood and leave impressions much accurately than words can. For example, in a piece of news coverage of environmental problems, photographs or videos of melting glaciers can help to illustrate the message of global warming. It is claimed that visual images have a way of resonating with people, and therefore they stimulate engagement of readers so as to pass on a message precisely. On the other hand, some people may point out that visual images sometimes only capture a few moments of the whole story. Although the connection between readers and imagery can be established instantly in a news report, the objective reporting is usually compromised by the emotions generated by excerpted photographs and videos. Another concern worth mentioning is that advances in digital technology have led to the creation of visually compelling forged photographs and videos. Nowadays, many websites and applications compete for attention with manipulated visual images at the expense of unbiased news reports. As a consequence, people with poor ability to identify whether a real-world image is original or has been manipulated can suffer severely. Overall, although the increasing popularity of visual images in news reports is an irreversible trend, people should be aware of the improper use of them, and professional ethics should be advocated in news media to ensure the reasonable usage of photographs and videos.
