1.学术教育（academic study）的目的是传授学生各个学科内的理论知识（theories）和实验方法（experiments），以帮助学生更好地了解现代科学（modern science）的内容（content）、作用（function）和研究方法（research method），从而让他们能够以科学的知识和方法，推动各领域的建设和进步。

2.人格的培养（cultivation of personality）也同样是教育的责任，如果只关注学术能力的提升而忽视社交能力教育的话（development in social and practical skills），学生很有可能出现很多心理问题，如无法信任他人、缺乏安全感、焦虑、抑郁等等。所以沟通能力、压力疏导能力（pressure release）等，都是和学术能力同等重要的，对学生的健康成长来说不可或缺。
